Thanks for your timely responses to my pleas for help.  Just in case you get
other requests from newbies about this problem in the future.

I found the solution - it is because of a new hash that MySQL uses in
version 4.1 for passwords. Just do this from the MySQL console:

set password for someone dot 

Doing this will resolve the problem.
