This can perhaps be done with a very tiny hack in the sourcecode. In 
modules/project/class.project.inc, find the line that says:

$this->atkNode("project",NF_EDITAFTERADD);

And change it to:

$this->atkNode("project",NF_EDITAFTERADD|NF_MRA);

You should now have a set of checkboxes. I'm not sure however if this 
might have implications, because there's a reason why that flag isn't 
there in the first place. But if you care to try, be my guest.
